Medical Billing and Coding Questions

by Anonymous

I'm going to school for medical billing and coding and it's online. I have some questions:

Do I have my own office to work at if I'm working in a doc. office or hospital?

Answer: It depends on the employer and their offices. Really due to the nature of the work you need to have some degree of privacy - to concentrate on your work and make phone calls. There are some practices or billing offices that have a few people in a room separated by partitions. Many times you will have your own office. As a minimum the biller/coder has their own desk.

Do I have to deal with any patients?

Answer: If you are working on billing you do get questions (phone calls) from patients regarding their bill or balance. This usually happens not long after patient statements go out. Sometimes they don't understand the EOB (Explanation of Benefits) and the billing specialist has to explain what the insurance company pays, deductibles, coinsurance, etc. If the patient has provided the wrong insurance or other demographic info then they will usually call when they get a statement.

Do I have to have experience before I can work at home?

Answer: Typically yes - you do have to have some experience before working from home. Of course this depends on the employer - and I haven't seen any that will hire someone starting out and allow them to work from home.

Of course if you have a billing service or work as a contract employee you would be more likely to work from home.

Thanks so much!!

Great questions - hope this answers them - Thanks,
