Urgent – what are the requirements for becoming a medical biller?
Answer:
There are no real concrete minimum defined educational or government mandated requirements to be considered a medical biller. In a nutshell however to perform the tasks of a medical biller requires an understanding of the insurance claim process, familiarity with diagnosis codes, and how to interpret the insurance payment information.
In other words to be considered a competent and effective medical billing specialist requires knowledge and skills obtained through training or experience – or in most cases a combination of both. A good medical billing specialist training or certificate program can take anywhere from 6 to 9 months to complete. Most local vocational or community colleges have programs for medical billing and coding.
Medical coding is a little different – there are several levels of certification which denote a coders knowledge and level of competence.
Hope this answers your question – thanks!
