I have searched everywhere, and I cannot find the state requirements to start a medical billing company in Texas and Arkansas. Can you please tell me where to start? Do I need a certification, permit, home inspection, and or licensing. Is there a checklist available?

Thanks in advance,
Clarissia

Response:
Hi Clarissia,

I’m not aware of any state that has specific requirements or regulations for medical billing. Most states, counties, and cities do have requirements for obtaining a business license. In my state I pay a small fee to the state, county, and the city I reside in for a business license.

As far as professional registration I’m not aware of any state that regulates or requires credentials specifically for medical billing – but I’ve only had to deal with Georgia and Alabama. However credentials such as coding those awarded by AAPC or AHIMA do help in establishing as a credible and competent professional when marketing your business.

Typically information on the requirements for doing business in a state can be found with the Secretary of State’s office. For Texas this is:

www.sos.state.tx.us/corp/related.shtml

for Arkansas it’s:

www.sos.arkansas.gov/BCS/Pages/default.aspx

Hope this helps.
