Easy To Read – Emphasize Your Strengths
From my own experience reviewing medical billing resumes, it’s really helpful for the reviewer when the resume is easy to read and gives a good idea of how this applicant can help us. When you have a big stack of resumes, you typically scan them first to narrow down the field. I’m more likely to set the resume aside if it clearly and quickly conveys the how the person can help our team.

Remember when someone is reviewing your resume they are thinking about things like “Will this person fit in?”, or “Can they get the job done?” or “Will they require a lot of training and time to get up to speed?”. They are basically visualizing how you will meet the needs of the position.

As someone who’s reviewed medical billing resumes for hiring, the things I think about when reviewing a resume are:

  • Is this person trustworthy.
  • Do they have a commitment to their work.
  • Will they require any training – how much of my time will I have to spend on training.
  • Do they understand the claim processing.
  • Are they easy to work with.

Address Job Needs
It’s important to make sure your resume addresses the needs of the job. If the job description mentions software skills, make sure your resume reflects all the different types of programs you have experience with.

If they mention medical billing codes, describe your knowledge or familiarity with coding.

If it mentions EMR or HIPAA, include your experience or knowledge related to the subject.

Since the work of a medical billing specialist is so important to the financial health of a provider, make sure you mention your specific contributions and specific quantifiable results you have achieved. If you weak on experience, discuss your understanding of the reimbursement process and the obstacles to claims getting paid.

One of the important responsibilities of a medical billing specialist is resolving issues with denied or rejected claims and resubmitting. This is common to just about every practice which may have tens of thousands and even hundreds of thousands of dollars of outstanding unpaid claims. If you can effectively convey your skills in resolving these kinds of issues, you will be a valuable employee.

Emphasize your understanding of co-pays, deductibles, co-insurance, and write-offs. These are important concepts that are routinely performed and sometimes difficult to grasp.
