Medicare primary or secondary with a supplement

If you're not in the medical field how are you to know what your primary what your secondary and what your supplemental is?

Subsequently you tell your doctor the wrong information and he turns around and bills you when you purchased all the insurance that you can purchase. I feel it's his job to keep up with this not yours. You've got enough problems or you wouldn't be going to the doctor.

I certainly understand your frustration - especially being on the billing end.

One of the challenges we have in billing is that if all the correct insurance information is not collected up front by the doctors office, we don’t know there is secondary or supplemental insurance coverage.

Consequently after the primary insurance is billed, the patient may be sent a bill if no secondary insurance has been entered.

But most times when this happens and you get an unexpected bill, you can frequently call the number listed on your bill (the billing service or office biller) and give them the correct secondary insurance information. They can then resubmit the claim to your secondary carrier for payment.

Hope this helps answer your question. Thanks for visiting our site and sorry to take so long to respond to your submission.

What to do if your provider is NOT covered by Medicare
by: Debbie Gilbert

I have been billing for mental health for the last 20 years and one of the MOST frustrating parts of my job has been billing for Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) when Medicare is the Primary and another insurance is secondary. After all these years with so many "different" responses to the question of how to get a denial from Medicare so that the Secondary will pay. FINALLY, I received a response from BCBS that stated since an LPC is NOT a covered provider for Medicare - I just need to bill Secondary as the Primary (no modifiers, nothing, no selecting if client has another insurance, etc.) and it has worked like a charm. I hope this helps someone who bill mental health.
