I would like to know if I was to place an order for the books, how would I go about becoming a certified Medical Biller? Or sit for the state exam?

by Edith Feeney
(Virginia Beach VA)

If I was to place an order for the Medical Billing Books how might I go about sitting for the state exam in my state? Also will the certification be good for any state as a Medical Biller?

Edith,

I'm not aware of state certification or exams specifically for Medical Billing. The only organization I'm aware of that offers certification through examination in Medical Billing is AMBA - the American Medical Billing Association.

The AMBA certification is for a Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist (CMRS). It's an exam based certification that shows a knowledge in insurance reimbursement, medical terms, coding (ICD9, CPT4 and HCPCS), claim appeals, and compliance (HIPAA and OIG).

The Healthcare Billing and Management Association also offers the Certified Healthcare Billing & Management Executive (CHBME) and Certified Medical Billing Associate (CMBA).

However I don't know of state governments that recognize certification. Typically state agencies license a profession to demonstrate a minimum competency, level of knowledge, or ability as required by law. But I'm not aware of any who license the Medical Billing profession specifically.

For those operating a business - such as a Medical Billing Business - most states do typically require a business license. But that's not associated with a level of competence in a profession.

Thanks for the question - hope this helps,

Gina
